Chapter Eighteen

Bithiah

Bithiah ran out of her bedchamber to find people hurrying through the palace, calling to each other in panicked voices.

“What’s going on?” she demanded of a guard passing by her door. She didn’t know what had happened to the regular guards who were usually stationed at her room.

“The Libyan tribesmen have crossed the border and are advancing on Mennefer,” the guard said, hurrying past. “The pharaoh has fled to Pithom. Protect yourself, and go to the courtroom where the doors will soon be barred.”

Bithiah stared at the man. Her father had fled the palace and left her behind?

“Where is his family?” she called after him.

“They’ve gone with him,” he said before turning a corner, intent on being anywhere but standing in the corridor with her.

“They haven’t gone with him. I’m still here—I’m still left,” Bithiah said. Then she thought, Moses! She ran down the corridor, following the guard, calling after him. “Did Moses go with the pharaoh?”

Thankfully, the man stopped. “No, he went out with Commander Pentu to fight. They’ve taken the Hebrew slaves with them.”

The breath left Bithiah. Her son was battling against the fierce Libyans. And who were his comrades? Untrained slaves.

“Come to the courtroom with the others,” the guard said. “You’ll be safe there.”

But Bithiah could only stare at the guard.

“Princess, you must come and save yourself,” he urged.

She shook her head, and finally the guard left, running again.

Bithiah blinked her eyes slowly as if she was just waking up from a dream. She turned from the direction the guard had gone and moved through the now-empty corridor toward Moses’s room.

As she stood in the entrance of his empty chamber, she knew her son would have never abandoned her like her father had. Only the call of fighting to save her would take him away.

She walked into his room and crossed to the door that led to the west-facing courtyard. She opened the door and stepped outside. If she hadn’t known better, she might have thought it was just another hot day filled with sunshine. Yet the courtyard was deserted, and all was quiet. The flowers and bushes seemed motionless, as if they were holding their breath. Even the birds and insects were silent.

“Moses,” she whispered as if he was standing next to her and could hear, “don’t be foolish. Be careful, my son.”

A scream sounded from somewhere within the palace, and Bithiah turned to peer through Moses’s room to the corridor. Two men ran down the hall, shouting for weapons.

Bithiah’s head snapped back to the courtyard, and she gazed at the ridges that rose in the west. She couldn’t see any advancing army, but that didn’t mean the Libyans weren’t close. Fear crept through her, growing stronger as she considered where Moses was and what he might be doing. Fighting for his life. Fighting for Egypt.

“Oh, Ra, god of the sun,” Bithiah said, sinking to her knees. She prostrated herself beneath the orange, round sun. “Protect my son. Bring him home to me safely. Spare our land and preserve Egypt.
